Rails and Trails: Los Baños - Sta Cruz Abandoned Branch

Twenty five (25) years ago, I started surveying all the abandoned railroad lines of Laguna using three mountain bikes. I intend to repeat all the rides I did this year using my three old mountain bikes which were recently restored. I also intend to survey the railroad lines beyond Laguna using my new Surly Long Haul Trucker 26 inches 54 cm touring bike.
.
My 1990 custom built mountain bike, lugged, Tange Prestige tubings, Tange Racing dropouts, recently converted to single speed (33T-20T) using Surly Singleator, spacers and cog.

The historic Pila Church and Town plaza bear witness to the birth of organized mountain biking here in the Philippines 25 years ago. My first training day.

A short ride to Pinagbayanan and Laguna de Bay.

The new Pinagbayanan-Pila dirt road and the "salog" of Pila (left of the picture). Training ride 1.

Training ride 2. Laiya Beach, San Juan, Batangas.

Blue Coral Resort, Laiya, San Juan, Batangas. Training ride 2.

The start of 2010 Rails and Trails ride. Manila Railroad Company ROW at Manaol, Nagcarlan, Laguna.

Century old railroad sleepers along the Los Baños-Sta. Cruz branch. Manaol, Nagcarlan, Laguna.

Small Manaol railroad bridge.

The century old Manaol main railroad bridge.

Washing clothes along the river. Manaol Main Railroad bridge.

Barangay Buhanginan along the Manila Railroad Company ROW.

Only the east side pier of the Calumpang Railroad Bridge remains standing. The other side of the river is the ROW going to Magdalena, Laguna. The railroad bridge and water dam were washed out during a strong typhoon more than six years ago.
